In 1994, NAAAPI expanded the commemoration of World No-Tobacco
Day in the United States. This world-wide health event, held
on May 31 each year, is designated by the World Health Organization
(WHO) to recognize the major threat that tobacco use continues
to pose to global public health. From 1994 to 2000, NAAAPI spearheaded
World No-Tobacco Day events throughout the United States. |
NAAAPI
introduced the concept of holding a New Orleans-style Jazz
Funeral on World No-Tobacco Day to remember all those who
have died from tobacco with an event drawn from African American
cultural history.
Reverend
Jesse W. Brown, Jr., founding chairperson of NAAAPI and the
current acting executive director, serves as President of
the Board of the U.S. World No Tobacco Day Coalition. To see
