Concerned people express their beliefs about
Camel Menthols during a sit-in.

Participants
also joined in prayer at the sit-in.

In
1997, NAAAPI launched the "Say No to Menthol Joe Community
Crusade" which mobilized community groups across the nation
to reject the introduction of Camel Menthols, a brand extension
advertised with the Joe Camel icon with a special appeal to
Black youth who show a preference for mentholated cigarette
brands. NAAAPI also provided documentation |
on
the targeting of Camel Menthol to the Federal Trade Commission
(FTC) in its efforts to regulate Camel cartoon advertising.
R.J. Reynolds has withdrawn all Joe Camel advertising, due at
least in part to NAAAPI's highly visible protests. |
